2-Day Voyage
Visit Sweetwater County to get away and spend some time with the girls. Your great escape is closer than you think.
Day 1
8:00 a.m.
Pickup a fresh cup of coffee at Hooligan’s Espresso- try a local favorite, the Kinky Carter! With espresso beans blended into the drink, you’ll be prepared for a full day of activities.
8:30 a.m.
Set off for Lake Flaming Gorge — the perfect balance of water activities and outdoor exploration to satisfy your sense of adventure. Proceed west out of Rock Springs on I-80, then swing south on U.S. Highway 191. As you drive through open plains covered in sagebrush, look closely for herds of antelope.
10:30 a.m.
Arrive below the Flaming Gorge Dam to hike along the Green River. The downstream of the dam is legendary — both for its goliath-sized trout and its scenic beauty. Take the Flaming Gorge Dam Tour to get the full experience!
12:00 p.m.
Depart for Flaming Gorge Resort. Take a bite with a view at Flaming Gorge Resort Restaurant, the civilized way to experience the great outdoors. After lunch, head to Red Canyon Visitor’s Center to take in one of the area’s most breath-taking vantage points of the canyon and the shimmering lake below.
1:30 p.m.
Depart Red Canyon Lodge and head towards Manila, Utah. Travel through time at the Sheep Creek Geological Loop. The Uinta Fault, which runs for more than 100 miles along the north slope of the Uinta Mountains, is clearly visible in the extremely twisted rock layers along the upper part of the loop. Head back to Green River.
4:00 p.m.
Visit Expedition Island in Green River. Here, you can take an enjoyable stroll on the paved path that encircles the island. Easy parking access to the river can be gained next door at Evers Park. The island is comfortably shaded and features picnic tables, restrooms and access to the Green Belt Nature Walk.
5:30 p.m.
Enjoy dinner at the Hitching Post Restaurant and Saloon in Green River. A remodeled building, friendly staff and great food can all be found in the center of Green River. Afterwards, make sure to check out the nightlife around town.
Day 2
5:30 a.m.
Start your day with a yoga class at the Green River Recreation Center. Stretch your body and relax your mind.
7:00 a.m.
Visit the wild horses which can often be seen on the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop. The scenic drive is roughly 23 miles along good, gravel-base roads. Travel this loop and along the way you gain many chances to spy the iconic wild horses of Wyoming but also panoramic views of the Wyoming Range (west), the Wind River Range (northeast) and the Uinta Range (south).
A four-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicle is recommended. This is a true “off the grid experience” and cell service is limited! Make sure you have extra water. Let someone know where you are headed and when you plan to return.
11:00 a.m.
Grab lunch and a craft beer at Bitter Creek Brewing, located in the heart of Downtown Rock Springs.
1:00 p.m.
Visit the WWCC Natural History Museum to view five life-size replicas of dinosaurs that roamed Sweetwater County millions of years ago. The museum also displays several wall-mounted fossils of fish, huge leaves and reptiles as well as prehistoric pottery and other early human artifacts that have been discovered in the area. After you’ve checked out these pre-historic creatures, visit the Weidner Wildlife Museum which houses nearly 125 species of wildlife collected worldwide. This fascinating display entertains and educates visitors, excites hunters and often motivates interest in the conservation of outdoor resources.
3:00 p.m.
Get a pedicure at Escape Day Spa or Maya Medi Spa! A little pampering never hurt anyone!
6:00 p.m.
Enjoy a savory dinner at Eve's in Rock Springs which serves seasonal dishes that will satiate any appetite.
