Hunting in Southwest Wyoming
3-Day Fall Itinerary
Hunting in Wyoming requires a hunting license which can be acquired in advance through the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. This is a sample itinerary including various hunting areas only accessible if a person were to draw a tag.
From the dense habitats along the Green River to the arid landscapes of the Northern Red Desert, there are plenty of opportunities for hunting in Sweetwater County. Whether you’re in search of a trophy hunt, looking for an unforgettable outdoor excursion or both, this three-day itinerary includes hunting destinations and so much more in Rock Springs and Green River.
Day 1
Arrive in Rock Springs the night before and take your pick from one of the many hotels and inns.
4:00 a.m.
Get an early start to the day. Shooting hours begin half an hour before sunrise, so you’ll want to setup base between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. depending on the time of month. Grab a breakfast burrito at Pancho’s Mexican Food – open 24 hours.
4:30 a.m.
From Rock Springs, drive just under two hours to the Killpecker Sand Dunes, home to the elusive desert Elk and pronghorn antelope. The Alkali Draw Wilderness Study Area southeast of Steamboat Mountain has a higher concentration of wildlife, making it one of the better hunting spots in Elk Area 100.
Note: An AWD vehicle is required to navigate the Killpecker Sand Dunes. If the area is wet and muddy, roads become impassable.
6:30 a.m.
Hunt in the area for four to five hours. Elk in this area spend a majority of their time in open sagebrush, using distance rather than cover for security.
12:00 p.m.
Drive back to Rock Springs.
2:00 p.m.
Stop for lunch at Chill Grill for a burger and old-fashioned ice cream soda.
3:00 p.m.
Gather supplies for a night of camping including enough food for two or three meals, water and any other necessary supplies. Visit Sportsman’s Warehouse for last minute outdoor gear.
4:00 p.m.
Drive 44 miles south to the Little Mountain Disbursed Campsite, one of Sweetwater County’s most beautiful areas and home to abundant wildlife and vegetation. Follow US-191 25 miles south to CR 4-34 Upper Sage Creek Road. Drive west six miles to BLM 4402 Little Mountain Road and south 12 miles to the campground.

5:00 p.m.
Setup camp, cook dinner and settle in for an early night. Don’t forget to look up at night, the Little Mountain area is a great location for stargazing with clear skies 75% of the year.
Day 2
5:30 a.m.
Cook breakfast and prepare for a full morning of hunting.
6:30 a.m.
Setup base near the top of Little Mountain. The majority of antelope can be found in the sagebrush openings here. Hunt in Antelope Area 112 for as long as you like, and don’t forget to take in the stunning Southwest Wyoming scenery.
12:00 p.m.
Head back to camp and relax here. Cook lunch or begin your drive back to Green River and stop for lunch at the Restaurant at Flaming Gorge Resort.
Follow the Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway for unparalleled views of Sweetwater County’s hidden oasis. Take the long route by traveling south on US-191 and loop around the Lake Flaming Gorge onto HWY-530. Travel north until you reach Green River. You’ll also pass Flaming Gorge Resort if you choose to stop for lunch.
3:00 p.m.
Check-in at your hotel of choice in Green River.
3:30 p.m.
Relax at the hotel, visit the Sweetwater County Historical Museum or walk along the Greenbelt Pathway near the town’s namesake river starting at Expedition Island.
5:30 p.m.
Enjoy a savory dinner at China Garden Restaurant.
7:30 p.m.
Head to the Embassy Tavern for a cocktail or local beer to end the night.
Day 3
5:30 a.m.
Begin your final morning with breakfast at Penny’s Diner.
6:15 a.m.
Drive 30 minutes northwest to the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. The wildlife refuge opens half an hour before sunrise, so plan accordingly based on the time of month. Your final day of hunting will consist of deer, upland game birds and waterfowl in Deer Area 131. Deer in this area tend to stay near the Green River which runs through the wildlife refuge.

12:00 p.m.
Drive back to Green River.
12:30 p.m.
Enjoy a final lunch at the Hitching Post to end your Southwest Wyoming hunting adventure.
