With cooler temperatures and miles of snow-covered high desert, Rock Springs and Green River transform into a Wyoming winter wonderland. Explore the area’s dramatic landscapes with thrilling snow sports, including ice fishing and snowshoeing, or enjoy activities closer to town, like ice skating and hockey games. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, there’s plenty of adventure to be had this winter in southwest Wyoming.
For roughly four months a year, Flaming Gorge Reservoir is covered in a thick layer of ice — perfect for winter angling. Head out as early as mid-December to access the stashes of trout and burbot in the reservoir’s frozen depths. You may even land a record-breaking catch as Flaming Gorge Reservoir holds the title for some of the biggest trout caught in Wyoming.
Spend the day on the reservoir reeling in your catches and admiring the gorge’s incredible rock formations or go fishing in the evening, when some fish are more active. Throughout the winter, anglers can also participate in ice-fishing derbies like the Burbot Bash and La Barge Ding-the-Ling.
Whichever way you like to fish at Flaming Gorge Reservoir, you’re sure to find world-class ice fishing.
