What to Do on the Water

Lake Flaming Gorge combines the grandeur of Lake Powell with a solitude and tranquility that is increasingly rare within the United States. Because of this, it has become a haven for boaters and outdoor adventurers seeking an authentically Western on-the-water escape.

Fishing

With trophy-sized trout rewarding anglers year-round, Lake Flaming Gorge is one of the best coldwater fishing locations in the country. It’s not easy—an average angler can expect to put in many hours between catching fish, but during the summer months, lake trout can be found at 70-foot to 120-foot depths where they grow to enormous sizes.

Rainbow trout are found throughout the reservoir, and they usually become active during April. By May or early June, kokanee salmon action picks up with the fish suspended 25 to 30 feet deep in open water or pelagic areas. Even smallmouth bass can be found in the lake along the rocky shoreline habitat throughout the Gorge.

Tip: Linwood Bay, next to Lucerne Marina, is always a hot spot to catch the biggest trout.

Since Flaming Gorge stretches 91 miles in length and has about 350 miles of shoreline, the only way to truly experience the beauty of Lake Flaming Gorge in its entirety is to do so by boat. Three full-service marinas offer ski boats, fishing boats, houseboats, and pontoon-boat rentals, mooring, and fuel:

Rafting, kayaking, and tubing are also common in and around Lake Flaming Gorge and the Green River. From gnarly rapids to easy-going eddies, Sweetwater County waterways offer a variety of conditions to enter Lake Flaming Gorge. The best access points can be found in Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge, Jamestown, and Green River Whitewater Park.
