The transition from summer to fall can be bittersweet: back to school, shorter days, the temperature slowly climbing back down. But a vivid highlight of fall is the changing of the desert foliage. Bright yellows, reds and oranges take over Sweetwater County's flora from the high desert plains to the canyons and majestic mountains. Fall Colors in South Pass 

As fall arrives, the colors start to change in a beautiful way in South Pass City. You can observe this annual event and more.

South Pass City is a historic gold mining town and one of the state’s largest historic sites. Wander through town and see the exhibits before taking a nature trail toward Shoshone National Forest.

Shoshone National Forest is home to cottonwoods and rabbit brush that begin to turn a bright yellow each fall. Contrasted by the vibrant blue skies and earthly volcanic rocks, these fall colors are worth seeing and won’t be around for long.

Directions to South Pass City: Take U.S. 191 north, then take a slight right onto WY-28 toward South Pass City.

Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway 

West of Rock Springs, there is a 100 mile scenic byway that showcases all the beauty of a Wyoming autumn in just three hours. The Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway loops around the dramatic landscapes surrounding Lake Flaming Gorge. And in fall, the already breathtaking scenery transforms into an even more awe-inspiring sight. The high desert backdrop is highlighted with vibrant golds and reds as the leaves change colors for the new season, and the wildlife is active and prime for viewing as they prepare themselves for the coming winter. Hurry up and get out on this scenic fall drive before the season comes to a close. 

Directions to Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway:  West of Rock Springs, head south on U.S. Highway 191 deep into red rock country and the Green River-Colorado drainage basin.
