Many vacationers – especially those who don’t have kids or are retired – like to travel in the fall because there are fewer crowds at parks and landmarks. If your fall vacation has you heading to some of the quintessential national parks of the West, plan to stopover in Sweetwater County for a day or two. You won’t regret it!

RVing

Sweetwater County has five RV park locations. There are also a number of other lodging options including campgrounds, hotels and lodges. Visitors can even take advantage of off-peak deals and discounts.

Wildlife Viewing

We have 26,000 acres of high desert beauty in the Seedskadee Wildlife Refuge along the river between Fontenelle Dam and the town of Green River. Fall means breeding season for pronghorn, mule deer, moose and elk. Flocks of birds also join the refuge, including prairie and peregrine falcon, owls, nighthawks and Canada geese.

Bald eagles arrive after summer to feast on the spawning kokanee salmon that appear to turn the river red. As the weather cools, ducks, mergansers and trumpeter swans also move into the area. Public roads and tour routes provide access to the refuge, which is open for walking. Historic sites for pioneer trails and early ranching are also accessible in several spots.

Scenic Driving

Highways 191 and 530 encircling Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area are designated scenic byways. The 160-mile loop of the Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway is accessible from the towns of Green River and Rock Springs via Interstate 80. It takes just about three hours to complete the loop, depending on stops.

The Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Tour between Rock Springs and Green River offers a shorter route – 24 miles and about 1.5 hours of drive time. This trek is best made in a high-clearance vehicle and under dry weather conditions.
