To help you get the most out of your two-wheeled adventure in Sweetwater County, use our Wilkins Peak Trail Itinerary below.
Start the day with an early wake up time — allowing you to get the most time on the trails.
Head to the local bike shop and coffee shop, The Bike and Trike, located in Rock Springs. Enjoy a cup of coffee while you learn from local riders about which trails to attack and why. Before leaving The Bike and Trike and embarking on your ride, make sure you stock up on any last minute gear or trail maps.
On your way into the town of Green River, stop by the Hitching Post resturant and pick up a to-go sack lunch.
Arrive at the Wilkins Peak Trailhead. The closest starting point to the majority of the trail system is just southeast of the City of Green River’s shooting range off of Forest Road 171. To get to the main trailhead you will turn off of East Teton, just north of Jackson Elementary School, on to Scott's Bottom Road, cross the river bridge. The road makes a sweeping right turn and you will see a parking area next to the City’s outdoor archery range Parking A.
Once parked in Parking A, you have easy access to some of the lower elevation and novice trails to warm up. Make your way to the Channel Surfing trailhead for your first ride of the day. This 1.66-mile trail is perfect for beginners or novice riders. Channel Surfing follows the Green River and offers great views of the river, the town of Green River and the surrounding bluffs. The Channel Surfing Trail connects with 10 Ring, another novice trail which is about .83 miles long. The 10 Ring trail provides plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities such as deer, moose, pronghorns and more. The trail will make a loop and take you back to Parking A, where your ride began.
Head back to your car and feast on a homemade sack lunch you picked up earlier that day at the Hitching Post in Green River. Make sure you hydrate and fuel up for an afternoon of riding.
End the day on the Lower Tide trail, just south of Parking A. This beginner/novice trail is 2 miles long and is family-friendly. This trail parallels Green River and will make for a beautiful ride as the sun begins to set.
After a full day of riding, head back to downtown Rock Springs, and reward yourself at Square State Brewing. Enjoy locally made craft beer and cuisine. Try one of our favorites - the hoppy and refreshing Boar's Tusk ale - named for our famous Boar's Tusk geological feature.
Call it an early night and head back to your hotel, RV Spot, campsite or guest lodge to get some much needed rest before another day of mountain biking.
Start your day off right at Cowboy Donuts in Rock Springs, featured on the Food Network. Try one of their famous kolaches or 55 varieties of specialty donuts, including hand-chopped apple fritters, blueberry cake, and raised donuts that will knock your boots off with flavor.
Drive to the Wilkins Peak Trail system. Pass Parking A and take the left fork at the “Red Barn” and continue to follow the road for .5 miles. You will then pass Parking B and an Information Kiosk on your right, and continue on Forest Road 171 for two more miles until you reach the beginning of Brent & Mike’s trail.
Take your first ride of the day on Brent and Mike's trail, which is a six-mile intermediate loop, allowing you to start and stop on the same trailhead. The trail has many bridges and ladders as well as rock shelves and shwoops through washes for you to discover, or if you are a less adventurous rider, there is an alternate route around each “feature” on the trail.
Arrive back at your car and get ready for a full afternoon of rides. Eat lunch, hydrate and familiarize yourself with the trail map.
Hit the trail again! Expert Riders can choose to conquer Pick Your Poison – which is a five-mile, advanced trail. Pick Your Poison offers several climbs in elevation, bridge crossings and some challenging switchbacks towards the top of the trail. At mile 3.2, make sure to take a break to enjoy the views looking to the southeast towards Flaming Gorge. The trail intersects with Cruiser which is a 2.2-mile beginner trail with a few intermediate technical spots that can easily be avoided if needed. Follow the trail along the base of the hillside east for a fun and flat ride until you reach the Brent and Mike’s trail.
From Brent and Mike’s trail, there are several options and routes you can take that vary in difficulty and length. Head west and choose from rides on Uncle Rico’s (difficult .42 miles) Quickdraw (intermediate 1.08 miles) or MacDaddy (beginner .37 miles). Head east and explore Overlook Trail or continue on the Brent and Mike's trail back to your car. Either direction you choose to ride will take you back to your starting point.
Pack up your gear and head into town for dinner and drinks at one of our local restaurants.
